Community health and safety is a primary goal of all the environmental activities on the former mill site. Under DTSC oversight, this includes monitoring, sampling and reporting to protect workers, our neighbors and sensitive coastal wildlife and habitats. Restricted access to the property is another important precaution and will be enforced by Georgia-Pacific and DTSC to protect both workers and the community.
Cleanup work during the 2009 construction season took place on portions of the mill site as described in the DTSC-approved remedial action plans. A variety of safety measures were incorporated into the soil excavation, treatment and containment activities.
- Work was limited to daylight hours Monday through Saturday, which helped reduce noise and traffic near the mill site.
- The majority of truck traffic for the cleanup work was within the mill site property and therefore not on public roads, as shown on the map of truck routes. Vehicles traveling on the property observed the posted speed limits at all times.
- To minimize dust generation, clean water was applied to disturbed areas such as excavation sites, soil stock piles and on-site truck routes. As needed, trucks and their tires were also cleaned to prevent the spread of soil beyond active work areas. Before trucks left the property, tarps were secured over loads as necessary.
- Air around the work areas was monitored (see map of air monitoring locations), and work paused or ceased during times of sustained high winds.

For Your Safety
The former mill site is private property and remains an active industrial area. Access is restricted to authorized personnel with the proper permissions and safety training. Although you may see some truck traffic through the main gate, it is either related to the DTSC-approved cleanup activities or associated with authorized use of the property for the Lowe′s Reload, Holmes Lumber operations, or City wastewater treatment plant.
